About Halifax

Halifax, Nova Scotia is one of the most fascinating cities in North America. As the capital of the Atlantic province of Nova Scotia, Halifax is a major port city on Canada’s Atlantic seaboard.

Founded in 1749 by the British, it was incorporated in 1841. In 1996, Halifax was combined with three other Halifax County municipalities into the Halifax Regional Municipality. It is situated on the second largest natural harbors in the world. This has made Halifax a major maritime city and the site of Canada’s largest naval facilities.

Halifax was the site of the largest man-made non-nuclear explosion that occurred in 1917 in the busy harbor when a munitions ship loaded with explosives collided with another ship killing more than 2,000 citizens of Halifax who lived near the port. The rebuilding of Halifax’s North End neighborhood led to progressive growth and development in the city.

Halifax is comprised of a rich heritage and culture that offers a variety of attractions and things to do. These attractions and sights range from its historic districts to the nearby sandy beaches to rugged shorelines and a lively downtown. Halifax’s downtown area features shopping, museums, art galleries, colorful gardens, churches, restaurants, nightclubs, and numerous historic sites.

Some of the historic attractions in downtown Halifax include Citadel Hill, a star-shaped fort located in the National Historic Park and Province House, which was built in 1819 and is Canada’s oldest seat of government. It is currently home to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Pier 21 is the site of the mid-1900’s immigrant entry point and is now a National Historic Site. Another museum that should be on a visitor’s itinerary is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. It contains exhibits that highlight’s Nova Scotia’s maritime history and include exhibits about shipwrecks, Titanic, Halifax Explosion, and boat building. There are several significant churches in Halifax that include Saint Mary's Cathedral Basilica and Saint Paul's Anglican Church, which is the oldest in Anglican church in Canada.

The Hydrostone, an area created after the Halifax Explosion, is one of the city’s most attractive neighborhoods and is a National Historic site. It is located north of downtown and features tree-lined boulevards and a European-styled marketplace. The Halifax Harbor and waterfront offers ferries and charter boats that can take visitors to the various islands in the harbor. Other areas of Halifax such as the North End, West End, Spring Garden, and South End offer different aspects of Halifax culture and heritage. Each area exemplifies the uniqueness and diversity found in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
